Capes of the Gods

The three dominant Gods in Ustalav are PharasmaUrgathoa, and Desna.  Among their symbols are spirals, skulls, and butterflies, respectively.

What’s the most important factor is choosing your deity?  The kind of cape you get to wear, obviously.  Here are some choices for discerning worshipers of the three gods.

The Manon Kündig piece inflates to actually be skull shaped, there’s an inflated pic in the show’s gallery.

My latest Useless Factoid

My latest fashion discovery:  Dracula’s cape was originally added for the early stage production, to hide the actor as he “disappeared” on stage via trap door. I always assumed it was just to look like a bat.  The tuxedo was just to look classy.

So, should you find yourself in fictional vampire-infested version of Transylvania (or, you know, Ustalav) and thinking about how to fake turning into a bat, here are some suggestions:

Also, if you’re into hypothetical-situation-fashion (and who isn’t?) you should be reading What to Wear When.  They are a style blog that puts together looks for important, yet often overlooked, situations. They provided not one, but two looks for Evil Queens, one for lizard people about to take over the world, and many others.

Dress The Iconics — Damiel

damielKeeping himself free from unwanted contamination is of utmost importance to Damiel, the iconic alchemist.  This Louis Vuitton (Spring 2015 Ready to Wear) patent leather/pleather dress provides all the all the protection — at least down to the knees — that any alchemist could want.  This is especially important for Damiel, when he uses himself as a test subject.

Dress the NPCs — Ailson Kindler

Anyone who watches Project Runway enough is familiar with the questions “Who’s your girl?” and “Where is she going?”  The answers for Saint Lauren’s Spring 2013 Ready to Wear Collection are clearly, “Ailson Kindler” and “Killing monsters in Ustalav“.

The whole collection would be pretty fantastic as the wardrobe for a Carrion Crown party.  Everyone gets a Monster Hunting hat that would make Imrijka proud.  Many have an Injustice Fighting coat worthy of Quinn.

Playing Paper Dolls

It’s not a big secret that I have a love for paper dolls.  They were my gateway into the world of fashion.  As a kid, every trip to a museum or historical site (and with my family, these were frequent) would end in a trip to the gift shop, where I would pore over the selection of paper doll books.  It was never a hard sell to get my parents to buy me one, they were cheap compared with the museum catalogs and glossy coffee tale books.  Dover Publishing make the BEST paper doll and colouring books. At least until The Baby Bestiary colouring book comes out, anyway.

I was only ever interested in what Dover calls their “Collectible Paper Dolls”. This was probably due to some gentle parental nudging towards the more ‘serious’ line.

These two books illustrate the difference perfectly:

Both by the same artist, with completely different target audiences.

The great books were all illustrated by Tom Tierney.  The best ones were based on actual magazine art or catalogs.

I never actually played with them, making up stories for them.  I just thought of different places they could go and things they could do.  And I then I chose the best outfit for the situation.  When they didn’t come with a suitable outfit, I would make my own.

Pouring over runway pictures, trying to choose a look that represents an Iconic or an Evil Queen takes me back to how I “played” with my paper dolls.

Everything I know about fashion, started with paper dolls.

Dress the Iconics — Shardra

Shardra is the Dwarven Shaman iconic and has a tuatara familiar, Kolo. There both getting new looks here.

shardraFor Shardra, Vivianne Westwood 2007 Fall Ready to Wear. For the colour combo, a skirt that looks kind of rock-like, and the hard/soft aesthetic.

koloFor Kolo, (who has a hard time keeping track of time) a dress made from newspaper.  I hope this helps him/her!  It’s a Project Runway challenge entry from Epperson Season 6, Episode 5.

Dress the Iconics — Project Runway Style

Does anyone still watch Project Runway? I still do.  It’s on episode 7, which means that almost everything that gets sent down the runway isn’t complete crap.  Mostly.  Better sites than this (TLo, for example) will break them down fashion wise.  I’m just going to assign them to an iconic.

Amanda

 Char

pr13-rr-ep7-cg-fSeelah, I guess (All that white makes me think ‘Paladin’.  Hopefully she’s about to smite that peplum.  Yep, grasping at straws for this one)

Sajan (It’s kind of inverted, but the grey and white with the crisscross over the chest remind me of his ‘shirt’)

 Kini

pr13-rr-ep7-kz-fAlahazra (white and flowey and the underpinnings don’t really make sense)

 Korina

pr13-rr-ep7-ke-fImrijka (she has an awesome red coat and comes from Ustalav)

 Sandhya

pr13-rr-ep7-sg-fDamiel (That print looks like a well used alchemist smock)

 Samantha

pr13-rr-ep7-sp-fEzren (It can case sleep twice a day at level 1.  It’s also kinda the same colour as his robes)

 Sean

pr13-rr-ep7-sk-fEnora (Not just ’cause I like her best.  The colour is right, and that band across the bust line dips down, like an hood, an anemic hood, but a hood)

Dress The Iconics — Zadim

zadimBetter late than never, right?  Zadim‘s image and story were revealed a while back.  Go look.

Zadim gets flowing navy blue fabric with gold accents.  Perfect for sneaking around (the Slayer class is a Rogue/Ranger hybrid) and apparently impersonating Enora (Since this looks like something that could easily have ended up in her Dress The Iconics post)

Evil Queen of Osirion

For the Evil Queen Pharaoh of Osirion, it’s all about white with gold, bold necklaces, lotus flower motifs, long column dresses, diaphanous fabric.

Valentino’s Fall 2014 couture collection combined many of these elements:os1 os2 os3

Even without the iconic lotus flower, these capture Osirian power dressing.
